Attractions of Quiet Hill Station Trek at Richenpong



Richenpong is a small hill station situated at an altitude of 1700 m in West Sikkim. This village is an ideal retreat for the people who are fond of getting natural beauty of hills. It is known for its views of the sunrise and sunset and the Himalayas and provides a splendid view of Kanchenjunga. Richenpong has many trekking options with the trek to the forest areas of Khandi Danra/Menlapso being a popular one. Various species of birds can be spotted in the forest. There are also various historical and heritage sites and the Ringsum Monastery to visit.

Places to See at Richenpong:



Richenpong Monastery: Rinchenpong Monastery is situated above the twin villages of Richenpong and Kaluk in West Sikkim. This 18th century monastery is a popular tourist attraction in West Sikkim. The Richenpong Monastery situated amidst lush green mountains and floating clouds. A breathtaking view is one of the attractions of the place. The entrance to the monastery is lined with colorful prayer flags.



Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary: The place is famous for the variety of Rhododendron that comes in full bloom during March and April. The Sanctuary is also home for a number of wild animals including the rare Red Panda.



Poison Lake: During the war between the Lepchas and the British, the Lepchas poisoned this lake, because this was the lake from where the British soldiers drank water. Hence it came to be called as the Poison lake.

How to reach Richenpong: The best way to reach is by taking a night train or bus to reach New Jalpaiguri station. Then you can avail jeeps from New Jalpaiguri jeeps via Jorethang. The journey is some 130 kms and takes some 5 hours along the banks of Rangeet and Teesta Rivers.

Best time to visit Rinchenpong: You can visit Rinchenpong during any time of the year but the mighty Himalayas are beast visible during the winter.
