Get a short trip at Rajabhatkhawa, Haven for Bird Watchers



Rajabhatkhawa is a town that is situated in the Jalpaiguri district of the state of West Bengal. There is a wild life museum located here where visitors can get information about flora and fauna of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. It has a wild animal rescue and treatment centre, an Orchidarium and a Nature Interpretation Centre. You must come to this centre to know many unknown facts of the forests.


The town is a haven for bird watchers and there are several species of birds that can be seen around the town. Like Goosanders, Ibis Bill, Fork-tails and many other species of birds. The place is famous for its numerous trekking spots and many of them are through the forests of Buxa.

Place to Visit at Rajabhatkhawa:



Chilapata: Chilapata is a dense forest on the way to Cooch Behar and is located around 20 km from the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. This dip and dark Chilapata forest is home to elephants and leopards. The forest of Chilapata abounds in a jumble of birds and animals. Chilapata itself is a world of colorful and beautiful birds like fishing eagle, shikra, crested eagle, jungle fowl, peafowl, partridge, Bengal florican, paradise flycatcher, racket-tailed drongo and pied hornbill.




Mendabari: The Mendabari Fort is located near the Bania River. The fort is said to date back to the Gupta period and was mentioned in Marco Polo's travelogue.



Rasikbil: Rasikbil is situated at the foothill of Sintura Hill of the great Himalaya in the Coochbehar district of West Bengal. It is basically low water land (Bil or Bill) or swamp, where water may be available all over the year. This lake is ideal for eco-tourism activities and for angling. The main attraction of the region is the wide variety of avifauna that is seen around here. The bird variety includes cormorants, different varieties of storks, ibis, spoonbill, kingfisher, parrots, owl,Mynas, Orioles, Owls, Parakeets, Partridges, Sunbirds, Swallows, Swifts, Woodpeckers, cormorants and many others.

How to reach Rajabhatkhawa: Rajabhatkhawa is 115 km from New Jalpaiguri. Taxis and private vehicles are available from New Jalpaiguri to Rajabhatkhawa. However, the nearest major railhead to Rajabhatkhawa is Alipurduar just 15 kms away. You would get rented taxis from Alipurduar to Rajabhatkhawa. Buses are also available but they are not much regular.
